Aside from just getting older, having four decades of experience in the fine wine trade - three of them as a Master of Wine - has its perks. Some are very expensive, almost all are very limited, but there dozens of "lesser known" cuvees that are relatively affordable and have a little more availablity.
My strategy, other than to buy the top wines when I am feeling flush, is to buy the value priced wines from the very best producers. Here you find brilliant, talented winemaking, from grapes grown the best terroirs in the world, all at a fraction of the price. Aligote, Bourgogne Blanc, Auxey Duresses and the like offer loads of great drinking - and won't break the bank.
