Spectacle Vins Montsant Espectacle 2018

Super Limited Spectacle Vins Montsant Espectacle 2018, a simply outstanding Spanish red from a single, incredibly steep vineyard planted with ancient (over 100 years old!) Grenache vines. The vineyard is located at La Figuera, on the northern edge of the Montsant D.O., very close to Priorat, and looks onto the famous Montsant mountain as well as having spectacular views of the Ebro valley and even the distant Pyrenees 200 kms away. Hence the name! The project is owned by several absolute rockstar Spanish winemakers, Rene and Isabelle Barbier of Clos Mogador and Sara Perez of Mas Martinet, two oenologists and teachers at the University of Tarragona, Fernando and Marta Zamora, and importer Christopher Cannan. René Barbier’s Clos Mogador team tends to the vines, and grapes are hand harvested and vinified by René in one special oak vat. The wine is simply stunning - super saturated red and dark fruits fill the air, with amazing ripe, richly layered Grenache fruit on the palate, with spice notes, supple silky tannins, amazing elegance and length. Grenache fruit and wonderful soft spicy flavors…and of course the enormous depth and complexity provided by the age of the vines. Only about 500 cases were made making this a super rare find, with much of it earmarked for the prestige restaurant trade in Spain and never making it out of the country. We were lucky enough to get just a tiny allocation. Don’t miss this opportunity to stash a true Spanish gem away in the cellar. Its ripe, super saturated character makes this wine amazingly approachable now, but it will no doubt be better with a few years in the cellar and for a decade after that! My guess is this is the next cult classic from Spain given its extraordinary expression of pure Grenache from 100 year old vines, the talent behind it and the amazing terroir where it is born.
