At Domaine de Durban, the Leydier family’s vineyards sit high atop pine-covered hills, perched over the expansive Rhône Valley. While most of their holdings are in the Beaumes-de-Venise appellation, they also farm a few hectares just over the border into neighboring Gigondas. The remarkable elevation and high limestone content of the rocky soils make their Gigondas stand apart from the rest, characterized by crunchy wild fruit and mouthwatering salinity. The Leydiers emphasize these traits by aging only in concrete and releasing it early, capturing a vigorous energy we are not accustomed to tasting in this great appellation.
Unfiltered to preserve its integrity, this generous and expressive wine embodies the estate's style: power, balance, and sincerity. Already approachable in its youth, it also has the potential to refine further with a few years of aging. Made from a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, the 2023 Gigondas from Domaine de Durban reflects the richness of the Durban hillside terroir.
Bright red fruit and leather define this delectable rich and full-bodied red. Paired with notes of darker fruit, spice, and herbs, this wine is a testament to the quality work and care that goes into making it.
Pairing: Hearty Provençal fare like grilled lamb, daube, or wild-boar ragu and decant if you’re holding it for a few years.
