It didn’t take long for the jovial and endlessly generous Alain Pascal to become one of the great producers of Bandol, fashioning reds that remarkably mirror his personality and stature in so many ways. After having sold his grapes to big-name Provençal estates, the former boxer and avid hunter followed his dreams of being a grower and winemaker. The result? Wines with stunning character, depth, complexity, soul, and finesse.
Alain’s vineyards are situated along the rolling hillsides around La Cadière d’Azur, where the hot summer sun and clay soils impart impressive power to his grapes. Alain’s blend features 80% Mourvèdre, which is above the appellation minimum of fifty percent. This choice results in additional concentration and brawn in his soulful Bandol. The power of Alain’s rouge is always balanced by plenty of freshness and finesse, making it an outstanding bottle to pair with a wide range of grilled and braised meats.
Paired with 10% Carignan, 10% Cinsault, and 5% Grenache, this powerful, savory, and utterly traditionally styled Bandol is full-bodied and well balanced. Firm, youthful tannins and good acidity give it considerable staying power. It is approachable with air now, but has the structure to develop significantly in bottle.
Pairing: Duck breast with tapenade or roast lamb for a sublime fall feast.
