Sylvain Morey Bastide du Claux Chardonnay Echo Vaucluse IGP 2024

This is the the third vintage of this outstanding white wine that we have fallen in love with! Once again it delivers amazing racy focus that brings to mind Chassagne or Puligny Montrachet from one of the more mineral Crus, or a top tier Chablis! 

Produced by rock star Burgundy producer Sylvain Morey from high altitude limestone vineyards in the south of France, you’d bet your bottom dollar it came grapes grown a hundred kilometers to the north. 

Close your eyes, taste this wine, and you will be certain that you are drinking at least a very good Bourgogne Blanc, or even a Village wine likely from somewhere near the famed vineyards of Chassagne or Puligny Montrachet, or even a top tier Chablis.

Open them and you realize this may be one of the best values in Chardonnay we have ever offered, at least now in the days of $50+ Bourgogne Blanc from top growers like Sylvain Morey! You’ll be even more surprised that it comes from vineyards some 450 km to the south of Beaune, in the Vaucluse region of France.

We have sold this wine since it first became available with 2021 vintage, and savvy buyers have snapped it up immediately on arrival ever since! If you’ve had this in the past already know what an incredible buy it is. If you haven’t you owe it to yourself to buy in as much as you can! A word to the wise, past vintages have sold out in days!

The good news is that we just received a small allocation of the 2024, and it’s every bit as delicious as the previous two vintages, perhaps with a bit more depth and power. The price is up just a little due to the dollar and tariffs, but it is still an outstanding bargain.

So why is this wine so good?

It all starts with pure talent and experience, namely legendary winemaker Sylvain Morey of the famous Morey clan. With generations of Burgundy winemaking in the family tree, this is not a guy whose talents are to be taken lightly. His Chassagne Montrachet Premier Crus will set you back anywhere from $150 to $200 per bottle, his Saint Aubins are in the $90s.

But back in 2002, with his famous father firmly ensconced in running the family winery, and very little vineyard land available (and the price of land outrageously high), he began looking outside of the Burgundy region and set out to create his own path in the wine biz.

What he found was a spectacular property in the hills of the Luberon National Park in the south of France. Here he pieced together a patchwork of parcels planted to 14 different varieties and scattered throughout the region.  They are at about 400-450 m above sea level, with cooler temperatures compared with other parts of Provence and the Southern Rhone.

The Chardonnay for this wine comes from two ECOCERT-certified organic plots  - Pertuis planted in 1992 and  Cabrières d’Aigues planted in 1997. Each parcel brings its own signature to the wine, one racy, fresh, bright, citrusy, the other riper and rounder with more yellow fruits. The result is somewhere between Puligny meets Chablis in style, and a white wine that will leave you stunned at its quality.

Then there is the price! At under $30 this is as close as you will get to a top notch white Burgundy anywhere, anytime. At $25.99 on six it’s an even better value!
